Friday October 11th 2019 is World Egg Day!
World Egg Day is celebrated around the world and helps to raise awareness of the benefits of eggs and their importance in human nutrition.
This year for World Egg Day, we want to highlight and celebrate the 5 key health benefits of eggs, identified by the International Egg Nutrition Centre (IENC). Learn about them here!
1. Eggs are among the most nutritious foods on the planet and a fantastic source of protein.
One single egg contains 14 essential nutrients–including everything from vitamins A, B, D, and E, as well as calcium, selenium and iodine. Additionally, they serve as a great source of protein, with 6 grams of protein per egg.
2. Eggs contain choline which aids healthy brain development.
Eggs are one of the best natural sources of choline. Choline is a super nutrient that plays an important role in building cell membranes; this means it impacts several vital functions in the body, from aiding in healthy brain development to improving liver function and metabolism. Choline is also found to reduce the risk of breast cancer by 24%!
3. Eggs can reduce the risk of heart disease.
Studies have shown that eating eggs daily results in increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol, decreased blood pressure, and does not change LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. In fact, the cholesterol present in eggs escalates the body’s ability to maintain high HDL levels. This means eating eggs can actually lower the risk of heart disease in healthy people.
4. Eating eggs can maintain good eye health.
Vitamin A deficiency is one of the leading causes of blindness internationally, and eggs are a naturally great source of vitamin A. Egg yolks also contain powerful antioxidants that can counteract some degenerative processes affecting eye health.
5. Eggs have benefits for all ages.
Eggs are the perfect source of nutrition across all ages. From providing the building blocks during foetal development, to containing the level of nutrients needed to sustain energy throughout the day, eggs are a healthy source of protein that should be enjoyed by all ages.
Celebrations will be taking place around the world to mark World Egg Day 2019.
