Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most celebrated holidays here in the United States. Thanksgiving is about showing thankfulness by having a feast with friends and family. It also marks the beginning of the “Holiday Season” with the weeks leading up to Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukah. For retailers, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of their busiest season. Thanksgiving is always the 4th Thursday of the month, and was declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Over the years, the American Culture has created several Thanksgiving traditions which include:

1. Preparing the Feast: Some families take weeks to prepare for their Thanksgiving Day feast – especially if they have a lengthy guest list. From preparing the menu, to ordering the turkey, to grocery shopping for fresh vegetables, a lot of action happens behind-the-scenes to make a traditional Thanksgiving feast a success.

2. Football: With almost every level of football, from amateur to professional, playing on Thanksgiving, football has become one of America’s favorite Turkey Day traditions. This year, the National Football League will be featuring three games – Packers at Lions (12:30 p.m. ET on FOX); Raiders at Cowboys (4:30 p.m.  ET on CBS); and Steelers at Ravens (8:30 p.m. ET on NBC). Nothing says Thanksgiving like watching a football game while preparing the feast!

3. The Wishbone: Often, families will include the breaking of the wishbone as a part of their holiday tradition. The wishbone is attached to the breast meat in the turkey’s chest. After the meat has been removed, the wishbone is removed and put aside, making the bone brittle and breakable. Two people pull at either end of the wishbone and make a wish – whoever pulls the larger portion of the wishbone is said to get their wish!

Whether you’re traveling, watching football, or preparing the feast yourself, Thanksgiving is a time to be shared with family and friends.
